Hybrid Poplar Trees

Hybrid
poplars are deciduous hardwood trees created by hybridizing or crossing
various poplar species. Poplars and their hybrids can grow in a wide
variety of climates and soil conditions. Many poplar hybrids, however,
have been selected for specific climates and even specific uses.
There are four primary species of native poplars that are used to create fast
growing hybrids. Those include Populus deltoids (Eastern
Cottonwood), Populus nigra (European Black Poplar), Populus
trichocarpa (Western Black Cottonwood) and Populus maximowiczii
(Asian Poplar). Broadacres Nursery grows many of the most widely used
poplar hybrids. Hybrid Poplar trees are harvested in January when the
trees are dormant. They are processed into nine-inch, unrooted
cuttings and packaged into bags of fifty and boxes of five hundred. Boxed
cuttings are maintained in cold storage until shipped or planted. We also
do specialty orders of hybrid poplar such as six and eight foot whips for
wildlife plantings and stream bank restoration.
Hybrid
poplars can grow under a wide variety of conditions. These fast
growing trees have been adapted to a number of uses including, stream bank
restoration, filtering agricultural runoff, cleaning contaminated soil and
groundwater, cleaning municipal wastewater and providing an alternative source
of wood fiber for the wood products industry. Homeowners are using
hybrid poplars for windbreaks, privacy screens, and firewood. In 1996, we
built our office building entirely from poplar sourced materials to demonstrate
the many uses of this tree and it’s ability fulfill societies need for
sustainably produced wood fiber. Please look at demonstration center for
more about the office.
Hybrid
poplars are usually ordered in the fall for spring delivery. Poplars are sold
FOB from Broadacres Nursery. A 50% deposit is required on all orders. The table
below shows a listing of the hybrid poplar varieties we currently have in stock.
Call early to insure availability. We can ship poplar cuttings and whips
to most locations within the United States. International orders will have
to meet the import and certification requirement of your country. Poplars
are unavailable from June to January.
